That's why the biggest year in history was 1972

How is 1972 the longest year

  • why the biggest year in history was 1972

    Reporter:

The biggest year in history was 1972. But what is the reason? How is 1972 the longest year? There are two reasons behind being the longest year. One is lip year, the other is two 'lip seconds'. Usually we haven't heard much about lip seconds even when we hear about lip year. 1972 was two seconds larger than the average time. That extra two seconds are called 'lip seconds'.

The reason for being big? It takes about 24 hours to move around the earth's own axis. Based on that, international time is determined. There are 86,400 seconds in 24 hours. And it takes 365 days to move around the sun.

Depending on this rotation, the night, tide and season

change. But the speed of the earth is not always the same. This motion of the earth depends on many natural factors. Sometimes the speed of the earth increases slightly and sometimes it decreases slightly. This led to tides, eruptions.

From 1972 onwards, lip seconds were added. Lip seconds were added in two days on June 30 and December 31. This extra second is called lip second.

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service determines which year the lip second clock will be

added. They have long since announced which year this lip second will be added.

A total of 27 lip seconds were added from 1972 to 2021.

For example, from 1972 to 1979, lip seconds were added on December 31, but no lip seconds were added in 1980. This was followed by two years from 1981 to 1983 on June 30.

Again, like in 1980, no lip seconds were added in 1984.

Last added in 2016. Lip seconds were added several times between 1984 and 2016. No more lip seconds have been added since 2016.

On December 31 this year, the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service may announce the addition of lip seconds in advance if

    necessary.

But many international organizations have proposed to drop lip

seconds. Because adding one second a minute prevents many computers from controlling overtime. As a result, many software sat in trouble.
